How to register a death

Registering a death overseas

You can register the death in Mongolia of a British national at the Embassy, or, if you are in the UK, with Consular Directorate in London.  If you have a relative or friend who has died abroad you may like to read our page on “Coping with death abroad”, which has practical advice on how we can help.

Consular death registration is not a legal requirement but there are some benefits:

  • an entry will be made in the death register by the British Consulate in the country concerned;
  • you will be provided with a British death certificate;
  • a record of the death will be held by the General Register Office in the UK.

You will need to register the death with the Mongolian civil authorities and obtain a full death certificate before you can apply for consular death registration. The consular death certificate will not include the cause of death as many foreign death certificates do not provide this information.  If you are resident in Mongolia you can apply for a consular death certificate from the EmbassyYou'll need to download and complete the registration form.

  Fees to register a death

The current fee for both in London and abroad is £151.
It will cost you £59 for each additional copy of the certificate you obtain from us.

After March of the year following the registration copies can be obtained from the General Register Office.

Please note: we are not able to accept personal cheques. The fees are closely regulated by Parliament and are set to cover administration costs.
