What if you have your marriage registered in a foreign country?

If the legal procedure for registering your marriage in a foreign country does not conflict with Mongolian law and regulations, the marriage can be registered in Mongolia and a certificate of marriage issued.

Registering a birth overseas

If you are a British national and your child is born in Mongolia you can register the birth at the Embassy, or, if you have returned to the UK, with Consular Directorate in London. There is no obligation to do this, but you will need to register the birth in one of these places if you want your child to be issued with a British birth certificate and for the birth to be registered at the General Registry Office in the UK.

We recommend consular birth registration because it enables you to obtain copies of the birth certificate from the General Registry Office in future.  It may also make it easier for your child to establish British nationality later on.

  Before applying for consular birth registration

You won’t be able to register the birth with your local registry office in the UK so you’ll need to register the birth with the local civil authorities in Mongolia and obtain a birth certificate from them.

  What documents do we need to provide?

To register a birth at the Embassy you will need to provide:

  • child’s civil overseas birth certificate;
  • the mother’s full British birth certificate (or Home Office Naturalisation or Registration Certificate if she was born outside of the UK);
  • the father’s full British birth certificate (or Home Office Naturalisation or Registration Certificate if he was born outside the UK);
  • the parent’s marriage certificate;
  • The parents passports.

You will need to provide the original documents and two legible photocopies of each. We can accept a certified copy of your passport but the bio-data page will need to be certified by a UK Solicitor or a notary public registered with the Law Society.

  What if you and your spouse are not married?

If you are a British man and your child’s mother is not, you can apply for a Consular birth registration only if the child was born on or after 1 July 2006.  If you are an unmarried women who has had a child abroad and would like the father’s details recorded on the certificate you will need to swear a Statutory Paternity Declaration.

  How much does it cost?

The current fee to register a birth, whether in London or at the Embassy, is £151. You may pay by postal order or banker’s draft.  We are unable to accept personal cheques. If you would like more than one copy of the certificate each additional certificate will cost £59. The fees are closely regulated by Parliament and cover the cost of administration.
