Our role
The British Embassy in Mongolia is responsible for promoting British interests in Mongolia and for maintaining and developing relations between our two countries. The work of the Embassy is overseen by the Ambassador. Mr Bill Dickson was appointed Her Majesty's Ambassador to Mongolia in August 2009 in succession to Ms Thorda Abbott-Watt. The Deputy Head of Mission is Miss Lynne M. Falconer.
In order to fulfil our role in Mongolia, the Embassy
- reports to Far Eastern Group in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London on political developments in Mongolia and acts as an interlocutor between Britain and Mongolia on official business. This involves close liaison with the Mongolian Administration and with political parties inside and outside Government, as well as making contacts with a wide range of other people in many different walks of life. We also arrange high level visits in both directions;
- tells people in Mongolia about British policies and values, providing information to journalists, teachers, students and others who are interested in Britain;
- administers a small bilateral assistance programme in Mongolia. This is targeted each year at specific objectives. In 2008/9 these are combating corruption and embedding democratic practice, good governance and respect for human rights, including the Kazakh Mongolian Muslim minority;
- provides Consular services and assistance for British citizens, unrepresented Commonwealth citizens and some EU nationals and processes visa applications from Mongolians and others who need them to travel to the United Kingdom.
We also act on behalf of other British Government Departments on a wide range of global issues from protection the environment to law enforcement and human rights.
